Hurricane Helene Expected to Intensify and Hit Florida: Prepare for Strong Winds, Storm Surges, and Heavy Rain
Helene is expected to bring heavy rainfall, strong winds, and dangerous storm surges to parts of Mexico, Cuba, and the Gulf Coast of the United States by the end of this week. Current projections show Florida may experience the storm’s impact as early as Thursday night. In preparation, Governor Ron DeSantis has declared a state of emergency in 41 counties, allowing for quicker response and coordination efforts.
As Helene moves through the Gulf of Mexico, the exceptionally warm waters may cause the storm to strengthen into a Category 2 or 3 hurricane. The storm’s landfall is projected to be in Florida’s Big Bend region, but residents from Florida's Gulf Coast to Louisiana are advised to stay alert.
Tampa General Hospital has begun installing flood barriers to protect against potential storm surges. Even after landfall, Helene may bring strong winds and torrential rainfall to areas across the Southeast, including Georgia and the Carolinas, raising the risk of flooding and power outages.
